Integrating Mental Health and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) for Adolescents and Young People (AYPs) in Kenya
Category: Research, Design
Topic Areas: Mental Health, Sexual & Reproductive Health, Public Health
Problem
Adolescents and young adults in Kenya face a dual burden of common mental disorders (CMDs) and sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges, with issues such as depression, anxiety, unintended pregnancies, and HIV on the rise. These conditions are interrelated—CMDs impair decision-making, leading to risky sexual behaviors, while SRH issues exacerbate mental health conditions. Despite these interconnected health risks, Kenya lacks integrated mental health-SRH services for AYPs, limiting access to comprehensive care.
Approach
This project proposes a mixed-methods study to explore the relationship between CMDs and SRH outcomes among Kenyan AYPs
The approach includes:
- Assessing the prevalence and risk factors of CMDs in AYPs.
- Exploring how CMDs influence SRH behaviors and access to services.
- Co-developing and piloting an integrated service delivery model with AYP input.
Pottential Impact
This project aims to bridge the gap in mental health and SRH service provision for AYPs, improving health outcomes and reducing risks associated with unaddressed CMDs and SRH challenges. By developing a gender-sensitive, integrated care model, the project will foster better mental and reproductive health, promote safer behaviors, and increase service accessibility for vulnerable young populations in Kenya.
